NEXT CItY RELEASES "TELL ME"

NEXT CItY RELEASES “TELL ME”

next-city-tell-me.jpg

Los Angeles rockers NEXT CItY have released their second single “Tell Me” along with an incredible video out everywhere today. It’s hot off the success of their debut “Blue Star,” whose video has now amassed over 60K views. In addition to the release of the single, the band has also launched a Kickstarter campaign filled with exclusive merch, signed photos, personalized messages and more as rewards for their fans.

“NEXT CItY bring something a little heavier to the table, some real gritty alt rock sounds come through whilst the vocals keep the track on its radio friendly path. It’s certainly a big sound from a band who have all the potential to become a household name.” -YACK! Magazine (on “Blue Star”)

Lyrically, this song is all about the back and forth of being involved with someone, but being unsure of what they want from you. Philip Paulsen (guitarist) started with a riff and composition, then handed it off to Larsen for lyrics and melody, a perfect example of the dynamic duo’s synergetic work.

NEXT CItY is the brainchild of vocalist and actor Samuel Larsen, best known for his work on Glee as Joe Hart and his supporting role in the current hit film After (based on the novel by Anna Todd that became a worldwide phenomenon) and guitarist Paulsen. The two met while on tour together and began writing for a brand new project they wanted to be heavy in garage rock grit, layered over a foundation steeped in groove. They have a unique way of fusing their experimental energy with the modern era of rock n’ roll. With fuzzy, funk-tinged guitars and pocket beats, their sound is familiar on the ears, yet unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. The quartet is completed by the unwavering rhythm section of bassist Nick Diiorio and drummer Ben Brinckerhoff. They’ve come together to perfect their brand of guitar-driven rock influenced by heavy hitters like Death From Above 1979, The Dead Weather, and Queens of the Stone Age, all while encompassing the electric energy of funk-driven pop music that takes its cues from Prince and Michael Jackson.

“Most people probably haven’t heard of the band NEXT CItY, but all of that is about to change in the coming weeks.” -Regional Music Journal

The band will also bring their infectious sound to a live setting, playing showcases in both Los Angeles and New York this June.

WASI RELEASES "RUN"

WASI RELEASES “RUN” AHEAD OF THEIR ‘LOVE IS GAY’ PRIDE CELEBRATION TOUR

wasi-run.jpg

Los Angeles rebels WASI have released “Run” out everywhere today. This is the second single from their anticipated debut record Riot Pop coming out June 7th just in time for Pride Month. With “Run,” the band ushers in a new movement of self-empowerment. “It’s about being comfortable in your own skin,” says Wasi. “ Instead of running from pain and your own identity, it’s the decision to run with it and completely own yourself.”

“WASI is the pop band the world needs right now.” AFFINITY MAGAZINE

WASI’s anthemic songs are deeply rooted in their experience as outsiders. They own their voice in an often cloudy world. The band draws equal influence from the rebellion of the Clash and the pop sensibilities of Tegan & Sara. Not only do they write songs about defiance and shaking up the system, but they live it everyday. At the helm of the band are newlyweds and human rights activists Jessie Meehan and Merilou Salazar. The group developed and produce the Women Fuck Shit Up Fest that takes place in Los Angeles, and last year made its Washington D.C. debut.  Their activism reached new heights last year when they single-handedly got Walgreens to establish a nationwide bathroom discrimination policy. See the video on the ACLU website HERE.

In addition to working to change policies at major corporations like Walgreens, the band is heavily involved in the local community level, working with LGBTQ youth centers around the country at every tour stop. They’ll be doing the same on the Love is Gay tour, starting in June, meeting with kids in each city to talk to them about music, art and above all, spreading a message of pride and acceptance. With these ventures, they keep the themes of equality and love of self a constant in their music and lives outside of it.

“Like the rad, queer riot bands before them, this Los Angeles duo, comprised of Merilou Salazar and Jessie Meehan, is about more than just sick beats: it’s about using the emotive intensity of sound to rock the world into a better, more progressive future. “ –CURVE MAGAZINE

JAMIE MCDELL RELEASES EXTRAORDINARY GIRL

JM_AlbumCover.jpg

LISTEN TO EXTRAORDINARY GIRL: HERE

“Ringing guitar chords are backed by atmospheric layers of keyboards, but the true stunner is McDell’s unforced voice, which has already led the Americana artist to gold certifications and award nominations in her native New Zealand.”  Rolling Stone on “Extraordinary Girl” (single)

New Zealand native Jamie McDell has released her third album Extraordinary Girl out worldwide today. Independently released, the record came together between Auckland, NZ and Nashville, TN where she recorded all the tracks with award-winning Australian producer Nash Chambers. It also features a hearty cast of country music legends including Kasey Chambers, Bill Chambers and Tami Neilson.

This record reflects her deep love of the music from her childhood. It formed the fundamental elements of what inspired her about songwriting the most - honest vocals, raw acoustic guitar and deep storytelling. Being drawn to artists like James Taylor and John Denver in her early years, she booked a trip to Nashville for a change of scenery a few years ago to connect with the environment that birthed the country/folk music of her youth. It was there that she wrote the songs that would make up the fabric of this record. On this work, McDell’s vocals are the most raw and vulnerable they have ever been: powerful, honest and reflect her core listening inspirations which also includes Patty Griffin and Alison Krauss. Putting the overall feeling of the album into words wasn’t easy, but McDell reflects on the personal challenge of leaving the comfort of home to write something that was honest and true. “Nashville was me getting out of my comfort zone and finding my way back to it. The listener is getting a sincerely true collection of stories that haven’t been tampered with since they were written. They are exactly what I felt like saying/singing at the time - raw, unpolished and deeply honest.”

“Showcasing more richness and density than the typical banjo and fiddle exercise, the album contains waves of haunting tremolo guitar ("Under the Bonnet"), fuzzy squalls and heavy distortion ("3AM," "Bad Attitude"), and a keen sense for crafting rewarding, sometimes even dramatic, vocal melodies.” –All Music

The singer-songwriter, who is in her mid-twenties, has achieved an enormous amount for someone so young. Being signed to EMI at age 16 sparked the beginning of a successful musical journey, making Jamie McDell a household name across New Zealand. With the release of her debut album Six Strings and a Sailboat, she went on to achieve Gold album sales, receive three NZ Music Award nominations and win Best Pop Album. Her sophomore record Ask Me Anything gained global attention, seeing album track “Moon Shines Red” featured on hit TV show Pretty Little Liars.

“The result of her long journey from home is a stunning, 12-song collection of raw confessionals, breezy anthems and plaintive storytelling rooted in the tradition of old school country and folk balladeers.” –Wide Open Country

COOPER & GATLIN RELEASE A STUNNING MUSIC VIDEO FOR “FRAGILE”

FEATURING NBC WORLD OF DANCE STARS KAYCEE RICE AND SEAN LEW

SK5.jpg

WATCH “FRAGILE”: HERE

Cooper & Gatlin have released a beautiful music video directed by Light Layer Productions for their new single “Fragile” featuring NBC’s World of Dance stars Kaycee Rice and Sean Lew. The raw and vulnerable nature of the track is perfectly complemented by the stunning choreography done solely by Lew. “As soon as I heard this song, I imagined a barrier where it represented the reality of what it’s like when two people aren’t ever on the same page in a relationship...we’re just really glad that we were able to share another story given by two incredibly talented artists,” Lew said.

“The world is loud [and] sometimes you need an excuse to slow down. ‘Fragile’ gives you a peaceful moment alone–so go ahead, hit repeat a few times.” –Idobi Radio

The LA brother-sister duo said “I think, to a certain extent, everyone is afraid of bringing another person in close, or telling them how they really feel, because the closer someone is, the more they can hurt you. Even with all that, in the end, it’s still worth the risk.” “Fragile” is only the pair’s third single and is hot off the success of their debut “Break” and follow up “Like You.” Their music delicately draws listeners into serious subject matters using the power of a danceable beat. The band’s prior offering “Like You” (now at over 107K views on YouTube) was described by Atwood Magazine as an “unnervingly memorable release, soaked in sunshine while also mired in emotional turmoil.” Upon its release, “Break” was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday U.S. playlist (now with over 521K plays) and the video has now amassed over 616K views. Ultra Records artist Tep No also produced a remix of the track that he called “one of the best remixes I've made.”

The two have the brilliant ability to blend elements of both acoustic and electronic elements so seamlessly into their music. They invite you into their cleverly crafted world with lush harmonies, tight melodies and playful brother-sister dynamic. They fine-tuned their sound when the pair’s family relocated to Los Angeles in 2014 from their hometown of Franklin, Tennessee. They’ve spent the past several years honing their craft as songwriters and musicians by forging their wide array of influences together to create a sound uniquely their own. They recently wrote a batch of new left-of-center pop songs that are fun and uplifting in delivery, but still deeply personal and relatable.

“Cooper & Gatlin's latest video is simple but doesn't hold back on aesthetics. The all-too relatable lyrics and intricate acoustic guitar shine.”  – Popdust (on “Break”)

NEXT CItY ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF "BLUE STAR" + LOS ANGELES AND NEW YORK SHOWCASES

NEXT CItY ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF “BLUE STAR”

+ LOS ANGELES AND NEW YORK SHOWCASES

next city.jpg

Los Angeles band NEXT CIty is making their sonic assault on the world with the release of their debut single  “Blue Star.” NEXT CIty is the creation of vocalist (and renowned actor) Samuel Larsen, best known for his work on Glee as the Joe Hart character, and his supporting role in the current hit film After , based on the novel by Anna Todd that became a worldwide phenomenon and guitarist Philip Paulsen. The two met while on tour together and began writing for a brand new project that would be heavy in garage rock grit, layered over a foundation steeped in groove, with the intention of getting people to shake off their inhibitions and dance. The band is rounded out by bassist Nick Diiorio, and drummer Ben Brinckerhoff who have helped to perfect the band’s brand of guitar-driven rock influenced heavy hitters like Death From Above 1979, The Dead Weather and Queens of The Stone Age, all while encompassing the electric energy of funk driven pop music that takes its cues from Prince and Michael Jackson.

Following releasing solo music in the pop and funk world, Larsen had the itch to start a rock band, to write and perform with. “ ‘Blue Star’ was the first song I started working on with a band in mind”, says Larsen. “I had the riffs and lyrics for a while before I met Phil and I felt stuck,  like I couldn't fully finish it, so I handed it off to Phil and he tightened up the arrangement, added a falsetto hook in the chorus and together we added a bridge.” “Blue Star” is inspired by the dichotomy between the dream and the reality of Hollywood and how it can be the dream but also the nightmare. The song is performed from the point of Hollywood and that they are enticing the dreamer with the bright dreams, but haunting her with the harsh reality too.

Later this summer, in addition to the release of their second single "Tell Me”, the band will be playing Los Angeles on June 5th at the Peppermint Club (tickets and info HERE) and June 11 in New York at the Mercury Lounge (tickets and info HERE).

WASI RELEASES “WHAT IS RIOT POP?” & ANNOUNCE RIOT POP ALBUM + LOVE IS GAY TOUR

RP_Singles artwork_What is Riot Pop-FINAL.jpg

“WASI is the pop band the world needs right now” - AFFINITY MAGAZINE

Los Angeles band WASI is excited to introduce the world to Riot Pop, a genre ushering in a new movement of empowerment and inclusion with the release of their single  “What is Riot Pop?,” from their forthcoming album Riot Pop  due out on June 7th.

“Like the rad, queer riot bands before them, this Los Angeles duo, comprised of Merilou Salazar and Jessie Meehan, is about more than just sick beats: it’s about using the emotive intensity of sound to rock the world into a better, more progressive future. “ - CURVE MAGAZINE

So “What is Riot Pop?” It’s about being true to yourself and trusting your instincts. “It’s being on the edge of an airplane cabin ready to jump,” says Merilou Salazar (WASI co-founder), “being scared as all hell but you jump anyway because in the end life is short and you need to live it to the fullest,  then just when you think it’s all over, your parachute opens and you land safely-just like all the risks in life we’ve taken. You trust that parachute just like you trust in yourself and your gut decisions.”

“WASI…...is a pop dream for woke grrrls.” – BUST

WASI’s anthemic songs speak of their experience as outsiders and owning your voice in a cloudy world. The band draws equal influences from the rebellion of the Clash and the pop sensibilities of Tegan & Sara. Not only does WASI write songs about defiance and shaking up the system,  but they live it everyday. At the helm of the band are newlyweds and human rights activists Jessie Meehan and Merilou Salazar. The group developed and produce the Women Fuck Shit Up Fest that takes place in Los Angeles, and last year made it’s Washington DC debut,  have worked with LGBTQ youth centers around the country and on their upcoming Love is Gay tour, starting in June they will be doing the same, working with LGBTQ centers around the country meeting with kids in each city to talk to them about music, art, and above all spreading a message of pride and acceptance.

The group's activism reached the national level last year, where they single-handedly got Walgreens to establish a  nationwide bathroom discrimination policy. Two years ago, Jessie and Merilou were on their way to the Pride festival in West Hollywood and stopped at the Walgreens on Sunset and Vine. Jessie, who is a woman but tends to dress a bit more masculine asked to use the restroom and the manager on staff refused to open the women's restroom,  insisting she use the men’s room. After some humiliating and frustrating back and forth the couple went straight to the ACLU boot at the Pride festival to share their story. Jessie then worked for a year writing letters on the local level, then the state level and the ACLU stepped in when Jessie made her way to the national Walgreens headquarters and together,  they got Walgreens, with 8,000 stores in the U.S. to adopt a nationwide policy to address bathroom discrimination. See the video on the ACLU website HERE.

COOPER & GATLIN RELEASE “FRAGILE”

FragileCover-FINAL.jpg

Alternative pop duo Cooper & Gatlin have released their beautifully raw new single “Fragile” out everywhere today. The brother-sister pair said of their latest release, “I think, to a certain extent, everyone is afraid of bringing another person in close, or telling them how they really feel, because the closer someone is, the more they can hurt you. Even with all that, in the end, it’s still worth the risk.”

“It’s hard to believe that ‘Like You’ is only the second single released by this duo. Most artists take a while to find their sound, but Cooper & Gatlin have got theirs down. They’ve found their voice. “Like You” is an upbeat anthem with a unique sound. The catchy beat, clever lyrics, and smooth vocals make for a perfect addition to all of your playlists.”

Affinity Magazine (on “Like You”)

Their previous single “Like You” was inspired by observing a rocky child-parent relationship where the roles were reversed and the child became the parent. Armed with a catchy hook and infectious production from Steve Solomon (who produced the James Arthur hit “Say You Won’t Let Go” which has surpassed 1 Billion streams), they delicately draw the listener into a serious subject matter using the power of a danceable beat. The success of the track and video (now at over 106K views) came hot on the heels of their debut single “Break,” a rhythmic and relatable tune about the stoic face you put on in front of ex- lovers. Upon its release the track was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday U.S. playlist (now with over 510K plays) and the video has now amassed over 615K views. Ultra Records artist Tep No also produced a remix of the track that he even called “one of the best remixes I've made.”

KEZAR RELEASES “FEELINGS”

Feelings-final3.jpg

Indie pop band Kezar has released their groove-laden third single “Feelings” out everywhere today. “Feelings" was the first song penned for the project. It will always be a milestone for frontman Jack Mosbacher’s life who said "in a few days, we found a new sound, a new attitude and a new chapter in our lives. It’s a song about a woman who is totally in control, from a man’s perspective - she is confident and fearless. As my mother’s son and sister’s brother, I hope that the song is entertaining and fun but also an anthem for empowerment and the unmatchable strength of women."

Previously, they released their incredible debut “(Tell Me) It’s Not Love” followed by “Let’s Talk About You.” Working with producer K-Kov on both tracks (Keith Urban, Justin Timberlake), they managed to create two highly danceable earworms packed with joy and romance. The video for their debut (that has now amassed over 110,000 views), was inspired by the beautiful aesthetic of the classic tale Pride & Prejudice. The track was also added to Spotify’s official Love Pop and Young & Free playlists.

“(Tell Me) It’s Not Love,” [is] an unmistakably radio-ready pop bop. Blending soulful vocals with a dazzling array of modern indie-pop elements, it’s an electric debut destined for major attention. We’re seeing KEZAR in bright lights on famous marquees. We’re hearing his neon anthems on Top 40. We’re thinking he just carved himself a well-deserved spot in the wild world of pop stardom.”  The Music Mermaid

Seasoned musician Jack Mosbacher is the mastermind behind Kezar. He comes from a strong soul background and the more you listen to each cleverly crafted beat, the more you recognize it as the backbone of his newfound signature pop style. Mosbacher also has a deep admiration and respect for the artists that came before him. Using state-of-the-art synthesizer technology, he and the producers added throwback elements from hip-hop’s glory days, like the big 808 drum machines on Run-DMC and NWA records and stacked backing vocals and bass synths reminiscent of the 2000’s Hyphy Movement – homages to Mac Dre, Mistah F.A.B., Keak da Sneak, and Traxamillion.

“The song is the perfect combination of soul and modern pop” Affinity Magazine (on “Let’s Talk About You”)

When choosing a name for this project, Mosbacher wanted to stay true to his hometown of San Francisco by naming it after Kezar Stadium in the Haight-Ashbury district. Choosing the original home of the 49ers and a now music venue that played host to music legends such as Led Zeppelin, Santana and The Grateful Dead, seemed like the perfect segway into a new era of his career while staying true to his roots. While soul will always stay the backbone of Kezar’s music, he also draws inspiration from contemporary pop artists like Shawn Mendes, Bruno Mars and Sam Smith.

ANIIML RELEASES A STUNNING NEW SINGLE “OUCH!”

OUCH! cover copy.jpg

Artist, activist and ultimate provocateur ANIIML has released her new single “OUCH!” out today worldwide. She has also put out a stunning video for the track that dives deep into the realm of mysticism with enchanting visuals and a witch-pop arrangement. With this song and video, she sends an intoxicating symphonic message straight to the open-hearted.

“OUCH!”, once again, leads a viewer into a looming mysticism and pairs it with a liberating message.”  Earmilk

The song was inspired by a text she received from someone she was casually dating. As an artist, she has always been prone to be overtaken by emotions, but has learned through an intense leadership training program she did during the period of writing the song, that our thoughts control our feelings, and she can choose to empower herself with positive thoughts or let herself go down an emotionally overwhelming rabbit hole. The video tells the story of the "ruler of emotions,"  who guards the tree of hearts where all feelings live and grow. The final heart to get planted in the video is “self-love,” the result of nurturing all of our feelings, giving way to emotional freedom.

OUCH! hearts copy.jpg

ANIIML is the project of Canadian born, LA based singer, songwriter, producer, film-maker and activist Lila Rose. GREG HOLDEN RELEASES WORLD WAR ME

WORLD WAR ME FRONT.png

Listen to World War Me :  HERE

“Greg Holden is an artist who wants to do good, a tall order for anyone nowadays, but I feel safe with him leading the charge.” - Baylen Leonard (The BBC & The Bluegrass Situation)

Just in time for Brexit, Los Angeles based artist and UK expat Greg Holden has released his fourth studio album World War Me in conjunction with BMG Recordings.

The songs that make up  World War Me are the spoils of a psychological war that was waged in Holden’s mind, which he has coined as his “Great Existential Crisis of 2016. It was then and written during the ongoing Existential Crises of 2017 & 2018” says Holden. After moving his life across the country from New York City, and being dropped by his label partner upon arrival, Holden started to question is worth and relevance. So he did what any artist questioning their worth would do to perpetuate their pain - he started googling himself. Holden came to realize his biggest successes were not from music written with the intention to get people to buy, stream, embed, playlist, swipe up or listen, but songs that were written with a purpose and for causes.  “The Lost Boy” (9 Million + streams on Spotify) raised $80,000 for The Red Cross and contributed towards building schools in Africa. “Boys in the Street” (18 + million streams on Spotify) was written for Everyone Is Gay, an organization supporting the LGBTQ youth community, and “Home,” made famous by American Idol’s Phillip Phillips, has been used by countless organizations.

To exacerbate this internal mental battle, Holden decided to record World War Me himself. This DIY mentality spread to the entire album process. Holden put together the artwork for the album, took his own press shots, built a new website and even wrote his own bio. The result is a stunningly honest and self-reflective body of work. Holden wrote the five of the nine songs on the album with his good friend and fellow esteemed songwriter Garrison Starr, and with the exception of  “On the Run” recorded by the legendary producer/songwriter Butch Walker, recorded every song on the album himself, in his home studio in Los Angeles.

The very first song written for the album, "I’m Not Your Enemy" was written the day after the 2016 election with Garrison Starr, while the two were on tour in Europe. Garrison being a lesbian, and Greg being an immigrant in the middle of his Green Card application, both felt extremely on edge, unwanted and abandoned by the country they called home. Instead of coming at the problem with anger though, they attacked it with love and penned “I’m Not Your Enemy” hungover the next day, and performed it that night to an arena of ten thousand.

“This beautiful melody will lure you in, like a hummingbird to the nectar, and replenish your sense of hope. It was never about fighting against something, at least not in total; there is a component that needs to awaken inside each heart, one at a time.”

- ChillFltr (on “I’m Not Your Enemy”)

The album finds a perfect balance between  feelings of warmth and empathy with songs like “I’m Not Your Enemy,”  and “Something Beautiful,” that promote love and understanding, and defiance, with tracks like  “The Power Shift” and “Chase the Money,” penned about the world’s ruling class and our culture’s obsession with money and power.

Holden will be playing songs from World War Me live this Spring on tour in the U.S. and in Europe. “My little album baby is finally coming out into the world after two years of mental instability and fear”, says Holden. “I’m excited for everyone to learn it and sing it back to me on tour, so I can feel self-righteous and arrogant again.”

COOPER AND GATLIN RELEASE A REMIX OF “LIKE YOU” IN COLLABORATION WITH FRANK POLE

Like You_remix_FINAL.jpg

Listen to “Like You (Frank Pole Remix)”: HERE

Los Angeles sibling duo Cooper & Gatlin have released a remix of their second single “Like You” in collaboration with electronic artist Frank Pole. Pole said of the track, “Remixing “Like You” was such a blast! Their voices blend together perfectly and I instantly fell in love with the record. This remix is one of my favorites so far, and I hope that everyone loves it the way I do.”

The original clever and catchy, “Like You,” was inspired by observing a rocky child-parent relationship, in which the roles were reversed and the child became the parent. Armed with a catchy hook and infectious production from Steve Solomon (who produced the James Arthur hit  “Say You Won’t Let Go” which has surpassed 1 Billion streams), Cooper & Gatlin delicately draw the listener into a serious subject matter using the power of a danceable beat.

“It’s hard to believe that ‘Like You’ is only the second single released by this duo. Most artists take a while to find their sound, but Cooper & Gatlin have got theirs down. They’ve found their voice. “Like You” is an upbeat anthem with a unique sound. The catchy beat, clever lyrics, and smooth vocals make for a perfect addition to all of your playlists.” –Affinity Magazine

Their incredible debut “Break” is an equally upbeat and relatable tune about the stoic face you put on in front of ex- lovers. It plays with the duality of looking unmoved before someone who has broken your heart. Upon its release, the track (which now has over 455K streams) was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday U.S. playlist and the video has now amassed over 615,000 plays. Ultra Records artist Tep No also produced a remix of the track that he also called “one of the best remixes I've made.”

“Cooper & Gatlin's latest video is simple but doesn't hold back on aesthetics. The all-too relatable lyrics and intricate acoustic guitar shine.”  – Popdust on “Break”

The duo’s seamless production blends elements of both acoustic and electronic music, creating a style all their own. They draw you in with their lush harmonies, tight melodies and playful brother-sister dynamic. They truly began to find their footing when the pair’s family relocated to Los Angeles in 2014 from their hometown of Franklin, Tennessee. They’ve spent the past several years honing their craft as songwriters and musicians by forging their wide array of influences together to create their own effortlessly gorgeous sound. Their new, left-of-center pop songs are fun and uplifting in delivery, but still deeply personal and relatable.

LETHAL AMOUNTS PRESENTS I AGAINST I: THE ART OF HR HUDSON & LORI HUDSON

LETHAL AMOUNTS PRESENTS

I AGAINST I

THE ART OF HR HUDSON & LORI HUDSON

lethal-amounts-hr-hudson.jpg

Los Angeles gallery Lethal Amounts is honored to announce i against i, an exhibition of new work from HR and Lori Hudson. Paul “HR” Hudson is best known as the frontman of the iconic punk band Bad Brains, formed in 1979. With unprecedented speed and precision, Bad Brains took the Washington, DC music scene by storm and quickly became one of the most influential bands of all time, breaking down cultural barriers and creating emotionally charged music centered on the message of maintaining a positive mental attitude (PMA).

“HR and Bad Brains to me represent fearlessness and going with your gut,” says Lethal Amounts owner and Creative Director Danny Fuentes. “The first time I put on their first album I could sense them putting their heart and soul into their art. The ferocity coming through the speakers made your blood pump and made it an almost religious experience. You wanted to feel what they were feeling and believe in something as much as they do. This is the exact feeling I am trying replicate with the shows we produce at Lethal Amounts. You can’t ignore things that come across so sincere and make you aspire to be better than anything you ever imagined.”

HR  currently performs with Philadelphia musicians Ezekiel Zagar (original McRad) and Josh Freshy as HR & Human Rights, and is currently working on a solo album. In addition to Human Rights,  HR has been in the studio working with Ty Dolla $ign and Vic Mensa.

“HR is by far one of the greatest artists, writers, and musicians of all time, to say the least. I grew up listening to Bad Brains and play their music before every show of mine to this day. I love how HR was always saying what needed to be heard in his lyrics. He stood for something at all times and was always growing to be a better person while bringing his fans along for the ride.” – Ty Dolla $ign

Lori Carns Hudson is a contemporary artist working mostly in acrylic, incorporating smooth textures and a combination of painterly and true to life details, often exposing herself through self-portraits, her work is about connection and loss. In it, she shares where she feels pain and where she finds healing.

Lori and HR met in Baltimore in 2001  where they began to form a friendship. That friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship and the two were married in October of 2012. Throughout the early years of their friendship and marriage, Lori played the role of wife and caregiver addressing HR’s mental health and his worsening headaches. After much trial and error HR was diagnosed with  SUNCT (Short-lasting Unilateral Neuralgiform headache attacks with Conjunctival injection and Tearing), also nicknamed “Suicide Syndrome.” HR underwent brain surgery in 2017 to relieve the headaches. He made a full recovery and continues to live most free from his crippling headaches, allowing him the time and space to work on his music, art, and marriage.

The exhibit is a collaborative effort in both inspiration and execution by HR and Lori.  The private show opening, for which both artists will be in attendance, will be held on June 1st at 8 pm at the Lethal Amounts gallery. To attend the event reply here or rsvp to rsvp@sideways-media.com.

BLIND OWL RECORDS ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF SATURDAY NIGHT SAGE BY AUTHOR NOAH C. LEKAS OUT APRIL 13TH

SaturdayNightSage_PR_Sample.jpg

San Diego’s Blind Owl Records is excited to announce their very first literary release, a stunning book of poetry and narrative prose called Saturday Night Sage,  from riveting fresh new voice, Noah Lekas. The physical book is currently available for pre-order (HERE), along with a a limited edition exclusive package that includes the book and 18x24 silk screen print of the cover and will be released in select book stores and through the Blind Owl website on April 13th.

The collection tackles mysticism, menial labor and self-medication. In the title piece, Saturday Night Sage, the sage navigates whiskey-soaked revelations with religion, folklore and dwindling opportunity. He wades through Eastern philosophy, Western theology and the American highways and factories of the Midwest in search of purpose and resolve. More than just bar room tales of flagrant dispossession, Saturday Night Sage emerges from the shadows of crumbling factory-life; giving voice to an often-undervalued American story. It bets-it-all that a Blue-Collar work ethic is all you need to get out of the dreary repetition of Saturday Night.

The book has early champions, that include world renown graphic artist Alan Forbes (Faith No More, Queens of the Stone Age, The Melvins, Mudhoney etc.),  who created the book’s cover art. In addition to Forbes, the pieces in Saturday Night Sage have moved a number of musicians and filmmakers to create audio and visual pieces inspired by poems from the book that will be released over the next month. The artists contributing  pieces include Shelby Baldock (Director North Mississippi All-Stars, Pianoman Pictures, Memphis, TN) , Scott Rosenbaum (Director/Red Hawk FIlm, New York, NY), Joshua Zimmerman (Director/The Silent Comedy, New York, NY), Jeremiah Zimmerman (Director/The Silent Comedy, San Diego, CA),   Blake Cook (Visual Artist, Cleveland, OH), with music composed by Dan Cervantes (Howlin Rain), Mrs. Henry, Chad Lee (the Silent Comedy) and more.

Saturday Night Sage is Lekas’ debut book release.  It was The Exterminator by William Burroughs and Hot Water Music by Charles Bukowski, that lit the fire in Lekas to pursue his creative passions.  Lekas found Burroughs through a recording of The ‘Priest’ They Called Him that he did with Kurt Cobain, and Bukowski through the band, Hot Water Music. Since then, for Lekas, music, and literature have been inseparable. After calling all four corners of the country home, his work is as uniquely American as his perspective, giving voice to an often overlooked and undervalued, working-class experience. Hailed as “A punk séance for the beat spirit,” Saturday Night Sage weaves the unwavering ethos of post-industrial Wisconsin with the poetic tradition of New York City and the eccentric Rock ‘n’ Roll soul of San Francisco.

GREG HOLDEN RELEASES “I’M NOT YOUR ENEMY” FEATURING GARRISON STARR FROM UPCOMING ALBUM WORLD WAR ME

WORLD WAR ME.png

LISTEN TO “I’M NOT YOUR ENEMY”: HERE

“A stirring new track.” - Variance Magazine

Greg Holden has released, “I’m Not Your Enemy” the latest single from his 4th studio album, World War Me,  coming out March 29th with BMG Recordings.

“‘I’m Not Your Enemy” was written with and features singer-songwriter Garrison Starr. The two, who also happen to be great friends, co-wrote five of the nine on songs that make up World War Me. The ideas for the album started to formulate “during my Great Existential Crisis of 2016, and the songs were written during the ongoing Existential Crises of 2017 & 2018” says Holden. At the time, the country was and still is, experiencing an unprecedented level of cultural and ideological divisiveness.  In addition to cultural tension, Holden went through a personal transformation that found him “quite literally at war” with himself. He had moved his entire life across the country for his label/career and upon arrival on the west coast, he was dropped by his longtime label partner. These changes prompted a tidal wave of self-doubt, where Holden found himself questioning his worth as an artist,  and the validity of his voice and perspective as a straight white man.

The self-doubt led Greg into the black abyss of the internet, where he did what any public figure questioning their worth would do, he started to Google himself. This search led to the discovery that his biggest success came from songs that were written with the intention of, and for organizations looking to lift people up.  His song ”The Lost Boy” (9 Million + streams on Spotify) raised $80,000 for The Red Cross and helped build schools in Africa. “Boys in the Street” (18 + million streams on Spotify) was written for Everyone Is Gay, an organization supporting the LGBTQ youth community, and “Home,” made famous by American Idol winner Phillip Phillips, has been used by countless organizations.

“I’m Not Your Enemy” was the first song written for the album. Holden was on tour in Europe with Starr in the fall of 2016, right in the middle of the 2016 presidential election. In the days following the election Starr who is a lesbian, and Holden who is an immigrant, felt on edge, ostracized and abandoned by the country they called home.  Instead of responding with fear or anger they wrote a beautifully compassionate song called “I’m Not Your Enemy,” one hungover morning and performed it that night to an arena of 10,000 people. The beauty in the song is its honest simplicity, driven by an acoustic guitar and the raw and moving vocals of Holden and Starr, emoting lyrics like “You might not recognize me from before the war began. How could you know after everything they told you, that I’m not your enemy, I’m not your enemy, only love can save us now.”

Holden sets off on his  #WorldTourMe tour that will take him through the  U.S. and Europe this Spring. See the full list of dates HERE.

THE MOWGLI’S RELEASE AMERICAN FEELINGS EP

American Feelings EP.jpg

LISTEN TO AMERICAN FEELINGS: HERE

[A] richly textured and rhythmic track…”

Billboard on “Norman Rockwell”

Southern California’s torchbearers of alt. rock positivity, The Mowgli’s have released their new EP American Feelings. The first three singles “Hard to Love,” “Mr. Telephone” and “Norman Rockwell” that have been released have received incredible feedback from fans and critics alike, and have garnered over 600K streams.

“‘Hard To Love”’ makes you want to dance to the lively rhythm despite the vocalists’ words about being “a little bit hard to love.” - Alternative Press

“The Mowgli’s build a case against mediocrity by mourning complacency. They depict an average American, craving so much more than what a day-in-the-life has to offer.” –Heart Eyes Magazine

"I can't thank @Themowglis enough for creating music that is so pure and honest to what its like living in the world today.  #NormanRockwell” - Anthony Scardina via Twitter

From their beginning as a music collective in Venice Beach, California, The Mowgli’s have been writing songs of love, unity, and togetherness. Their break out hit “San Francisco” brought them national attention and cemented the band as indie-rockers with purpose and a message. Two subsequent albums and an independent EP have captured an ever-growing fanbase drawn to their feel-good anthems. As they’ve grown, the group has balanced their positive music with songs that give a window into the trials of a working band: Juggling relationships, friendships and adulthood with the rigors of constant touring. With American Feelings, The Mowgli’s have, perhaps surprisingly, found greater bonds than ever before: If nothing else, the path is shared and those sharing it have an intimate knowledge of what the journey feels like.

"I’m totally not crying. Feeling this song so much right now. Proud of you all! Homies, go listen to their new song! It’s so good! ❤️ @Themowglis - Norman Rockwell.” - Kaylynn Michelle via Twitter

“we need to talk about it...it being the  newest @Themowglis song... i'm in love.”  - Kayla Jonas via Twitter

The theme of connection and the lack thereof in our modern world is woven throughout the four songs that make up American Feelings. They all touch on the lack of discourse and engagement prevalent in society today, especially with technology serving as both a facilitator and barrier. “Mr. Telephone” serves up social commentary on our relationships with devices, over a subtly hypnotic, yet infectious melody.  “Norman Rockwell” sees the band take a more maudlin melodic turn with the song's protagonist painting himself into a new world in his mind to escape the monotony of his current life. “Hard to Love,” the very first single from the EP, confronts the complicated idea of self-acceptance, over the bands signature sweeping melodies.  Rounding out the EP is “Talk About It,” a bouncing track about forgiveness and communicating through difficult situations.

“The EP slides into a hypnotic space with alt-rock head bobber with “Mr. Telephone”. “Norman Rockwell”, a hazy and laid-back song finds it’s lyrical roots in every youth’s disenfranchised America; and stomping, rolling rocker “Talk About It” snaps the EP closed succinctly.” - AMFM Magazine

“the new @Themowglis EP has my newest favorite songs, there's something to connect to in the lyrics of every one and they're all beautiful and catchy as HELL.”

- Joey via Twitter

The Mowgli’s - who began as a 10+ member group playing house parties and warehouse gatherings - is now comprised of singer/guitarists Colin Dieden & Josh Hogan, singer Katie Jayne Earl, drummer Andy Warren, keys player David Appelbaum and Matt Di Panni on bass. The release of their first major-label LP Waiting For The Dawn in 2013 saw immediate success with the hit single “San Francisco” and the band quickly found themselves playing to sold out crowds in clubs around the U.S. and inundated by requests for press, sponsorships and partnerships. The band’s music has accumulated 250 Million streams and counting, and they’ve graced the stages of major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, ACL, Firefly, Osheaga, Arroyo Seco, BottleRock, Bumbershoot and more. They’ve worked with major international brands such as Spotify, Abercrombie, Levi’s, GM, Dunkin’ Donuts, VW and Verizon and continue to spread their message of positivity not only through their music but through their work with charities such as Heal The Bay, Happy Bottoms and the International Rescue Committee. The Mowgli’s will be playing songs from American Feelings on their co-headlining tour with Jukebox the Ghost this month.

THE MOWGLI’S RELEASE “MR. TELEPHONE” SINGLE FROM AMERICAN FEELINGS EP DUE OUT MARCH 1

Mr. Telephone.jpg

California alt. rockers The Mowgli’s have released “Mr. Telephone,” the second single from their forthcoming EP American Feelings out March 1. The four songs that make up American Feelings all harken to the lack of discourse and engagement prevalent in society today, especially with technology serving as both a facilitator and barrier.

“Mr. Telephone” was written from observing the feelings of isolation, anxiety and the lack of connection in fans, friends, family and society as a whole, much of it fueled by technology. “With social media creating transparency, we can see so much more,” says Josh Hogan.  “We’re all so available & we get answers in a matter of seconds. Some of us thrive in this environment, and some just can’t seem to cope.” The pointed social commentary is delivered through a subtle hypnotic melody and sweeping infectious choruses that have become the band’s signature.

“We are all Mr. Telephone,” says Katie Earl  “seeking answers from a device in the palm of our hands, but after all is said and done, how much more connected are we? How much can we gain from spending time inside our phones, and how much do we lose? There is a lot of love and knowledge and connection outside of our little boxes, and finding a balance is more crucial than ever before.”

COOPER & GATLIN RELEASE THEIR CATCHY AND CLEVER SECOND SINGLE "LIKE YOU"

COOPER & GATLIN RELEASE THEIR CATCHY AND CLEVER SECOND SINGLE “LIKE YOU”

Like You_cover-FINAL (1).jpg

Up and coming brother-sister indie pop duo Cooper & Gatlin have released their second single “Like You” everywhere today. “Like You” was inspired by observing a rocky child-parent relationship, in which the roles were reversed and the child became the parent, losing out on having an actual childhood. Armed with a catchy hook and infectious production from Steve Solomon, who produced the James Arthur hit  “Say You Won’t Let Go” which has surpassed 1 Billion streams, Cooper & Gatlin delicately draw the listener into serious subject matter using the power of a danceable beat.

“It’s hard to believe that ‘Like You’ is only the second single released by this duo. Most artists take a while to find their sound, but Cooper & Gatlin have got theirs down. They’ve found their voice. “Like You” is an upbeat anthem with a unique sound. Their debut single “Break” is an equally catchy and relatable tune about the stoic face you put on in front of ex- lovers. It plays with the duality of looking alright before someone who has broken your heart. Upon its release the track was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday U.S. playlist and the video has now amassed over 612,000 plays. Ultra Records artist Tep No also produced a remix of the track that he even called “one of the best remixes I've made.”

“Cooper & Gatlin's latest video is simple but doesn't hold back on aesthetics. The all-too relatable lyrics and intricate acoustic guitar shine.”  – Popdust

The true brilliance of this duo lies in their ability to blend elements of both acoustic and electronic music so seamlessly. They draw you in with their lush harmonies, tight melodies and playful brother-sister dynamic. They really found their sound when the pair’s family relocated to Los Angeles in 2014 from their hometown of Franklin, Tennessee. They’ve spent the past several years honing their craft as songwriters and musicians by forging their wide array of influences together to create a sound uniquely their own. They recently wrote a batch of new left-of-center pop songs that are fun and uplifting in delivery, but still deeply personal and relatable.

“The duo came in fast and hot, bursting onto the pop scene with a woozy neon anthem for the broken-hearted, garnering over half a million views since its release.”  –The Music Mermaid
