LISTEN TO OPEN MOUTH, OPEN HEART: HERE

Northern California’s three-piece Destroy Boys have released their third full-length album Open Mouth, Open Heart produced by Will Yip, out today on Hopeless Records. The album is available worldwide on all major streaming services, as well as vinyl online and at your local record store.

Destroy Boys are Violet Mayugba (guitar/vocals) and Alexia Roditis (vocals/guitar), rounded out by drummer Narsai Malik. The punk trio has made a name for themselves writing visceral, personal songs of scene bullies, elitist cliques, betrayal, and unrequited love - and have won over the hearts and ears of eager listeners ranging from the fervent teens who pack out their shows to Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong (see his mention in the Rolling Stone cover story HERE via Instagram HERE). The band has been redefining West Coast punk, making waves from the California shoreline to the UK, sharing stages with up-and-coming bands like Mannequin Pussy, established acts such as All Time Low and The Story So Far, as well as punk stalwarts Face To Face and Lagwagon. In addition to having racked up over 80 million streams, their music can be heard in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 game, and Tik Tok has embraced them to the tune of 30 thousand user-made videos and over 3.5M views. Most recently the band was tapped by Fender Guitars for the launch of the Fender's  Player Plus Series.

Although this is their third full-length album, Open Mouth, Open Heart marks a number of firsts for the band. Recorded in Philadelphia earlier this year during the lockdown, Roditis, Mayugba and Malik lived in their own little bubble,  for the first time being able to patiently build the songs layer by layer.  Entering the studio with producer Will Yip, (who produced all the songs on the album except for “Muzzle” which was produced by Martin Cooke), with songs that were more fully formed allowed Yip and the band time and freedom to focus on the production. Another first includes writing and recording two in Spanish, “‘Te llevo conmigo” and  “Lo peor.”  “I grew up bilingual,” Roditis told the East Bay Express when asked about ‘Te llevo conmigo.”  “This song is a tribute to my grandparents. I didn’t get to know them but I feel them around me, so I wanted a song to honor them,”  I haven’t heard many metal songs in Spanish, so I was excited to write it.”

Open Heart, Open Mouth is a huge step forward for the band both musically and the depth and density of subject matter. “ This album is just a lot more dynamic,’ Roditis told INTO.  “There’s more guitars and leads — like, I play something, Vi plays something different, which is cool. It has a wide range of genres and types of songs: there’s a sort of metal-y song, we have that acoustic song, we have more mid-tempo Nirvana bangers, we have a political punk song. So it’s different in that everything that we put out, I feel like, sounds different than what it was but is still like a version of that. Like, we have children and they’re the same but look different, you know — like cousins.”

The band released 5 singles, leading into the album that showcases their growth and diversity as songwriters and musicians. “Everyone adding their own element makes the songs come alive,” says Roditis, “but the biggest difference was going from 19 to 21. I feel like a different person, esthetically.”  The first track“ Muzzle,”  that Alternative Press called “Ferocious,” is a blistering minute-long track.  Refinery 29 commented that “Destroy Boys aren't playing nice on ‘Muzzle,’  kicking ass and taking names in the high-energy new single about fighting back against the powers that be.”

The second single “Drink”  is a raw and honest look at the relationship that can exist with mind-altering substances, and how it can be both destructive and comforting. Brooklyn Vegan called it a “ripper,” and the SF Weekly said is “the most fascinating of this year’s trio of Destroy Boys singles, also commented that the song displays impressive lyrical depth. On a casual listen, it sounds like a love song wrapped in a pop-punk arrangement. Closer inspection reveals that ‘Drink’ is describing something closer to a love-hate relationship, and the subject of affection and revulsion is alcohol. It’s a candid, nuanced look at addiction.’

The next single  “Locker Room Bully”  saw the band punching back at bullies and the toxicity of the internet, with its culture of supporting half-truths and warped reality. KQED described it as “a proverbial middle finger that offers a swift takedown to petty-minded interlopers,” “Locker Room Bully,” was followed by “All This Love” which is as close to a ballad as the band gets on the album. The song is a lament about  earning for love, and ultimately a realization that you need to first love and connect to yourself before you can be a true partner in a relationship with someone else.  Spinning Platters said that  "The ballad may be more ferocious than any of their more aggressive works. That’s why this is the single of the week. It may end up being the single of the year. “

The single releases were rounded out with “Escape,” a song ironically written pre-pandemic about wanting an out from the regular life, and wanting to go on tour, and wanting to escape reality in any way possible. When the Horn Blows said the song sounds like “a blend of Blondie and the Misfits,” and When it’s Too Loud  said “...when a song is this great it's impossible not to love.’

This has been quite a year for Destroy Boys who have not only survived a pandemic, but a wave of online bullying, and after having to pull out of the Sad Summer Fest due to mental health reasons,  have regrouped and just this week played a blistering set of shows to packed houses in Northern California and in the Pacific Northwest. The band will be taking these new songs on the road on a National Headlining tour that kicks off in Southern California next month.

LISTEN TO “ESCAPE”: HERE

Northern California’s three-piece Destroy Boys are releasing the single “Escape,” the final single from their forthcoming album Open Mouth, Open Heart, produced by Will Yip. Coming out October 8th via Hopeless Records the album is available to pre-save and pre-order  HERE.

“‘Escape’  is about wanting an out from the regular life I was living,’ says frontperson Alexia Roditis.  “I wrote it pre-pandemic, though you might not have known that if you listened to it. It’s about wanting to go on tour and wanting to escape reality in any way possible.” Roditis will be getting her wish as the song is released on the heels of the announcement of their National Headlining tour that starts off in Northern California at the end of the month.  The band has made a name for themselves writing visceral, personal songs of scene bullies, elitist cliques, betrayal, and unrequited love - and have won over the hearts and ears of eager listeners ranging from the fervent teens who pack out their shows to Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong (see his mention in the Rolling Stone cover story HERE via Instagram HERE) and Fender Guitars, who partnered with the band for the launch of the Fender's  Player Plus Series

“Escape” follows the band's no holds barred formula of speaking their mind with cutting commentary on how our culture views artists, through unapologetic lyrics such as the monologue mid-song: "You know I don’t see anyone asking anyone of any other profession except for artists what their plan B is.  Like if you’re gonna be a mathematician no one asks you what your fucking plan B is even though who knows what they do, I don’t know. Ok. But we need art to live and survive but, I need a plan B? I do. Me. You know I could really go without ever hearing that question ever again.”

Twelve of the thirteen songs on Open Mouth, Open Heart were produced and recorded by Will Yip at his studio near Philadelphia during an intense, productive, and isolated February 2021.  The shredding 1 minute track “Muzzle” was produced and recorded by Martin Cooke in Los Angeles shortly beforehand. The album as a whole shows immense growth in the band both as musicians and people. Outspoken advocates for a myriad of social justice issues, especially when it comes to racial equality, LGBTQA+ rights, and inclusion for all, these themes are prevalent in their music, their actions, and how they use their platform. The album tackles themes of abuse, bullying, insecurity, as well as deeper familial forces and sees the band stepping into, and owning their power - and truly finding their voices.  It also features two songs recorded in Spanish, “‘Te llevo conmigo” and  “Lo peor,”  which is a first for Destroy Boys. “I grew up bilingual,” Roditis told the East Bay Express. “This song is a tribute to my grandparents. I didn’t get to know them but I feel them around me, so I wanted a song to honor them. I haven’t heard many metal songs in Spanish, so I was excited to write it.” The album as a whole is a huge step forward for the band both musically and the depth and density of subject matter. “Everyone adding their own element makes the songs come alive,” says Roditis, “but the biggest difference was going from 19 to 21. LISTEN TO “ALL THIS LOVE”: HERE

Northern California’s three-piece Destroy Boys have released their new single “All This Love,” the fourth track from their forthcoming album Open Mouth, Open Heart, produced by Will Yip. Coming out October 8th, the album is available to pre-save and pre-order  HERE.

“All This Love” is as close to a ballad as the band gets on this new album. The song is a lament about  yearning for love, and ultimately,  a realization that you need to first love and connect to yourself before you can be a true partner in a relationship with someone else.  This song follows three blistering singles. “ Muzzle,”  that Alternative Press called “Ferocious,”  and about which Refinery 29 said “Destroy Boys aren't playing nice on ‘Muzzle,’  kicking ass and taking names in the high-energy new single about fighting back against the powers that be.”

The second single “Drink”  is a raw and honest look at the relationship that can exist with mind-altering substances, and how it can be both destructive and comforting. Brooklyn Vegan called it a “ripper,” and Harderbeat said the song is “Lyrically poignant and musically full of hooks, this is the sort of track that just doesn’t sound like it reflects the subject matter until you really listen to it. A track that rewards multiple listens.” The last single release,  “Locker Room Bully” that KQED called “a proverbial middle finger that offers a swift takedown to petty-minded interlopers,”  saw the band punching back at bullies and the toxicity of the internet, with its culture of supporting half-truths and warped reality.

Although Open Mouth, Open Heart is the band's third full length album, it’s an album of firsts for Destroy Boys. Recorded in Philadelphia earlier this year during lockdown, Roditis, Mayugba and Malik lived in their own little bubble,  for the first time being able to patiently build the songs layer by layer.  Entering the studio with producer Will Yip, (who produced all the songs on the album except for “Muzzle” which was produced by Martin Cooke), with songs that were more fully formed allowed Yip and the band time and freedom to focus on the production. LISTEN TO “LOCKER ROOM BULLY”:  HERE

Northern California’s three-piece Destroy Boys announce the release of their blistering new single “Locker Room Bully,” the third single from their forthcoming album Open Mouth, Open Heart produced by Will Yip, coming out October 8th. The album is available to pre-save and pre-order  HERE.

“Locker Room Bully” was written from the perspective of someone wrongly vilified and speaks to the power of social media to spread hurtful misinformation, which can be a powerful catalyst for misplaced anger.  With its fast and short format, social media and the internet, in general, can easily become a game of telephone, with people sharing half-truths about stories they have no real connection to - leading to a whole culture dedicated to canceling people online. But the song is far from a lament -  it’s a powerful and rage-fueled statement that calls out online bullying and the way it tears people apart.  “‘Locker Room Bully’ is a product of the anger, desperation, and sadness I’ve felt in the last year,” says front person Alexia Roditis. “Throughout my life, I’ve been confronted with people who don’t like me or don’t get what I’m doing or people who think they’re right about something they know nothing about. I am frustrated to no end. But ‘Locker Room Bully’  is also my line in the sand, I suppose -  a sign of letting go of people and situations I don’t control and don’t care about me.”

Open Mouth, Open Heart as a whole shows immense growth in the band both as musicians and people. Outspoken advocates for a myriad of social justice issues, especially when it comes to racial equality, LGBTQA+ rights, and inclusion for all, these themes are prevalent in their music, their actions, and how they use their platform. The 13 track album tackles themes of abuse, bullying, insecurity, as well as deeper familial forces and sees the band stepping into, and owning their power - and truly finding their voices. The record includes two songs written and performed in Spanish by Roditis who is half Argentinian. “‘Lo peor’ was a secret and I didn’t want most people to understand what it was,” she says about recording and releasing their very first songs in Spanish. “‘Te llevo conmigo’ is about my family and my grandparents and the people who came before me, and I wanted to sing in Spanish as a tribute to my dad’s side. Speaking Spanish is important to me and I wanted to incorporate it in some songs so as to further celebrate my culture.  I know a lot of our fans speak Spanish and I wanted to make something for them! So much rock is dominated by the English language, but there are so many good rock bands who speak Spanish and I wanted to contribute to that.”

Twelve of the thirteen songs on the album were produced and recorded by Will Yip at his studio near Philadelphia during an intense, productive, and isolated February 2021.  The shredding 1 minute track “Muzzle” was produced and recorded by Martin Cooke in Los Angeles shortly beforehand. “Working with Will was like nothing we had ever experienced before,” says Violet Mayugba “as a band and as people. Being in the studio with him was a completely immersive experience. He helped us transform our record from something good into something jaw-dropping.”

Destroy Boys are Violet Mayugba (guitar/vocals) and Alexia Roditis (vocals/guitar), rounded out by drummer Narsai Malik. The punk trio have been redefining West Coast punk, making waves from the California shoreline to the UK, sharing stages with up-and-coming bands like Mannequin Pussy as well as punk stalwarts such as Face To Face and Lagwagon. Their visceral personal tales have won over the hearts and ears of eager listeners who pack out their shows. After more than a year of no live music the band is thrilled to be getting back on the road on road including the Sad Summer Tour, which kicks off tomorrow where they will be sharing the stage with All Time Low, The Story So Far, The Maine, Movements, and Grayscale.

WATCH  “DRINK”:  HERE

Northern California’s Destroy Boys are excited to announce the release of the video for their latest single  “Drink” along with summer and fall tour dates. The song was produced and mixed by Will Yip (Mannequin Pussy, The Menzingers, Quicksand, Code Orange etc.) Hopeless Records last month. “ ‘Drink’ [the song] is about being in a cycle of addiction that you can’t seem to escape,” says front person Alexia Roditis. “The video is about having visions that you’re afraid of becoming real life, becoming something you can’t control anymore. You’re not sure if you like this place you’ve been to before. But when you are deep enough to realize what’s going on, and that you want to change, sometimes it feels like it’s too late. “  The video takes the viewer through a hazy day in the life of the protagonist whose reality is someone between dreaming and reality.  “When dealing with alcoholism, days can often run together,” says director Katie Neuhof. “ Janet [our lead] is trapped in a never-ending cycle of work and drinking at the bar. Each time she enters the bar, things escalate, but she never notices. Finally, the other bar patrons take her to the dark side with them, trapping her in the bar forever”

Destroy Boys are a three-piece band founded by Violet Mayugba (guitar/vocals) and Alexia Roditis (vocals/guitar). Rounded out by drummer Narsai Malik they have been redefining West Coast punk, making waves from the California shoreline to the UK, sharing stages with up and coming bands like Mannequin Pussy as well as punk stalwarts such as Face To Face and Lagwagon. In addition to having racked up over 60 million streams, their music can be heard in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 game, and Tik Tok has embraced them to the tune of 20 thousand user-made videos and over 3.5M views. Their visceral personal tales have won over the hearts and ears of eager listeners who pack out their shows.

The band has been outspoken advocates for a myriad of social justice issues, especially when it comes to racial equality, LGBTQA+ rights, and inclusion for all, which is prevalent in their music, their actions, and how they use their platform. Frontperson Alexia Roditis told Punkzine, “I think the scene is opening up and people are realizing that queer people, POC, people of different abilities, fat people, women, make BADASS MUSIC that is underappreciated. These people have always been in the scene and always made art, and I think we are moving towards appreciating it and uplifting those voices more. I am happy to have been a part of that for some people.”  After more than a year of no live music the band is thrilled to be getting back on the road this summer starting Sad Summer Tour, dates with the Story So Far, and rounded out by headlining shows in the fall.

NEW SINGLE “DRINK” - AN EXPLORATION OF ADDICTION AND COMFORT

“ Using their platform on gender and racial equality as well as LGBTQIA+ rights, Destroy Boys channel that same unbridled passion into their lyrics. The group give a voice to the underrepresented with a fresh perspective on love, loss and everything in between.” - Alternative Press

“.....the three-piece – which comprises vocalist/guitarist Alexia Roditis, guitarist and backing vocalist Violet Mayugba and drummer Narsai Malik – have a sound defined by dirty vocals and even dirtier walls of electric guitar. - Guitar World

“  Making waves in the punk scene as loud as their dynamited guitar riffs, heavy percussions and scowling vocals and, they have captured the attention of some of the genre’s most influential musicians. The fresh-faced, young female fronted band are pumping fresh blood back into the life of power punk.” - Ladygunn

“If Destroy Boys are showing us a current direction punk is going in, maybe we should let them lead us there.”  - If it’s Too Loud

Northern California’s Destroy Boys are excited to announce the release of their single “Drink”, produced and mixed by Will Yip (Mannequin Pussy, The Menzingers, Quicksand, Code Orange etc.) out now via Hopeless Records. Being keenly in tune with issues such as mental health and social justice that have been exacerbated by this past year, “Drink” is a raw and honest look at the relationship that can exist with mind-altering substances, and how it can be both destructive and comforting.  It examines painful patterns that are passed down through generations and the desperation to break those patterns.

This is the band’s second single with Hopeless and follows the blistering track "Muzzle,” released earlier this year.  Alternative Press called that song “Ferocious” and RockSound commented that with “less than a minute in length and packed tight with thrashing guitars and barked vocals, it's a kick to the temple that is simply impossible to ignore.”  Refinery 29 said “Destroy Boys aren't playing nice on ‘Muzzle,’  kicking ass and taking names in the high-energy new single about fighting back against the powers that be. Turn this one all the way up.”  The song has been added to top punk and alternative rock playlists on streaming services all around the world, in addition to SiriusXM’s Faction channel, and has received early spins on numerous radio stations in Europe.

The band have been outspoken advocates for a myriad of social justice issues, especially when it comes to racial equality, LGBTQA+ rights and inclusion for all, which is prevalent in their music, their actions and how they use their platform.  Simply being two-thirds female and fronted by a queer woman is uncommon in a scene traditionally dominated by straight men. I am happy to have been a part of that for some people.”  After more than a year of no live music the band is thrilled to be getting back on the road on the Sad Summer Tour, which also features All Time Low, The Story So Far, The Maine, Movementss and Grayscale.

LETHAL AMOUNTS PRESENTS DESTROY BOYS

LIVE ONLINE MARCH 27TH AT 7PM PST

"Channeling the spirit of anarchic American garage rock and melodic sensibilities of classic Bay Area punk into short snarling songs, Sacramento’s Destroy Boys whip up noise that is truly timeless.”  - Rock Sound

“The band’s sardonic, biting tunes are a perfect blend of political subterfuge, headbang-able rhythms, and the overall catharsis of unrestrained self-expression. It’s scratchy punk that reminds listeners that it doesn’t really matter how technically sound you are, although Destroy Boys certainly have that covered as well, it’s about the passion, dammit.” - V13

“Destroy Boys have earned high-profile fans like Billie Joe Armstrong all before graduating from high school. - UPROXX

Los Angeles art gallery, promoter and connoisseur of cool Lethal Amounts is excited to announce their debut concert film with Hopeless Records and  San Francisco Bay Area Destroy Boys taking place March 27th at 7pm PT.  Lethal Amounts founder Danny Fuentes has built a reputation as the torchbearer of the counterculture, celebrating the cultreshifters of the past while championing up and coming creatives. The gallery has become a living and breathing history lesson of Punk Rock with photo exhibits from Leee Black Childers, the official photographer of Andy Warhol’s Factory to legendary Los Angeles photographer Edward Colver, who is best known for capturing some of the most iconic images of the hardcore punk era in Los Angeles.  Destroy Boys Live will be Fuentes’ directorial debut.

“For outsiders and outliers, Danny Fuentes’ gallery is a place to call home.”

- The Los Angeles Times

Destroy Boys are a three-piece band founded by Violet Mayugba (guitar/vocals) and Alexia Roditis (vocals/guitar). Rounded out by drummer Narsai Malik they have been redefining West Coast punk, making waves from the California shoreline to the UK, sharing stages with up and coming bands like Mannequin Pussy as well as punk stalwarts such as Face To Face and Lagwagon. They’ve also racked up over 40 million streams, with the numbers ticking upward every day without fail. Their visceral personal tales of scene bullies, elitist cliques, betrayal, and unrequited love have won over the hearts and ears of eager listeners ranging from the fervent teens who pack out their shows to Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong (see his mention in the Rolling Stone cover story HERE via Instagram HERE).

The band just released their searing new single “Muzzle,”  through their new label partner Hopeless Records,  that Alternative Press called “Ferocious”  and RockSound commented that with “less than a minute in length and packed tight with thrashing guitars and barked vocals, it's a kick to the temple that is simply impossible to ignore,”  The song has been added to the top punk and alternative rock playlists on streaming services all around the world, was added to SiriusXM’s Faction channel and has received early spins on numerous radio stations in Europe.

“Destroy Boys aren't playing nice in "Muzzle," kicking ass and taking names in the high-energy new single about fighting back against the powers that be. Turn this one all the way up.”

- Refinery 29

The single was just a taste of what’s come. The band has been working on a new album and after a 2020 that promised tours with Against Me! and Vundabar, as well as a slot on the Sad Summer Festival, the livestream offers up a front row treat for fans who haven’t seen the band live in a year, with incredible live performances of the new single “Muzzle,” fan favorites such as “Fences,” and “Duck Eat Duck World” that was featured in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2.  In addition to the performances the film gives a look into the recording process, and intimate interviews with the group on how they got their start playing shows and touring while they were in high school.

This is not the band's first foray into collaborating with Lethal Amounts.  Earlier this year Destroy Boys launched their second merch collaboration with Lethal Amounts (See HERE)  so working with Fuentes  on the livestream was a natural fit.   “Lethal Amounts was an absolute joy to work with,” says Roditis. “Danny has a wonderful creative vision and we loved collaborating with him on this project. He let us be free and be ourselves, while inputting his slick and unique twist on things.”

“To me,  Destroy Boys have that feeling of timelessness, says Fuentes. “I've seen them live and I got chills up my spine watching a band I knew no songs to yet. They just took me to another place in my mind, probably to that place when music and concerts were so new and exciting as a kid. They have something eternal about them and I wanted to capture a bit of that essence in a film and not just another  “live-stream” in a pandemic kinda world. Their energy is intoxicating and their self awareness is inspiring. I felt it was important to not just see them perform but see them as artists in the process of creating as well as giving us a glimpse of their personal philosophies.”

LISTEN TO “MUZZLE”: HERE

The San Francisco Bay Area’s Destroy Boys are excited to announce the release of their hard-hitting compact new single “Muzzle,” out today through their new label partner Hopeless Records.

“Led by singer Alexia Roditis’ sarcastic and wistful singing and Vi Mayugba’s shredding guitar, held down by Narsai Malik on drums, they pay homage to and represent an evolution of all things classically punk, making music that is a searing reminder of how recklessly expressive punk rock was designed to be.”  - Culture Collide

Having gotten their start playing shows and touring while they were in high school, they’ve seen and dealt with the same issues many teenagers face in a world run by adults: Being talked down to, brushed off, ignored, taken for granted, pre-judged - if they are even seen at all.  These experiences channel directly into their music and that authenticity is one of the main reasons for their rapid rise. Now in their early 20’s, their experiences are no less fraught with similar hurdles. The new single “Muzzle,” is a blistering track exploding with aggression and energy, produced by Martin Cooke (Death Cab For Cutie, Of Monsters And Men, and producer of Destroy Boys last LP Make Room). The song tackles feelings of being seen as disposable and subhuman, feeling out of control and taking your power back. It's an anthem for the unseen, written by Mayugba, and inspired by a toxic relationship where she was mistreated by a man she was in a relationship with. With “Muzzle” Mayugba also takes her first role as lead vocalist, seething out the lyrics  "You don’t know me / You don’t see me / You think I’m trash and you think I’m mean / I am not your fucking mannequin / Clothes pin call up your weekend sin / I am not your Polly Pocket girl /Chucking me in your donate bin."

The band is thrilled that “Muzzle” is their first release with Hopeless, a label whose diversity and particularly the number of women on staff, is something that really appealed to them.  “It’s important to have women, and queer people, people of color, and differently-abled people in all aspects of the music industry, to have that support. Now we’re able to have more of a say in who we work with, and when you have that kind of control, you should do good with it,” says Roditis.  “We’re really excited to be in a place where we can create the album we want to create,” she continues. ”They took our project very personally; they were really excited about us, and they don’t seem to want to infringe on what we have. They want us to maintain our own vision.”

"We are so excited to be working with Destroy Boys,” says Hopeless Records Vice President of Marketing Erin Choi. “They're incredibly talented and have such a powerful vision for who they are as a band. They inspire us as people, creatively, and through their passion for social justice. We think they're a great fit for the Hopeless roster."

“Muzzle” is just a taste of what’s to come. The band is working on a new album with Will Yip (Quicksand, The Menzingers, Mannequin Pussy), a producer they highly admire and respect. As for touring, after a 2020 that promised tours with Against Me! and Vundabar, as well as a slot on the Sad Summer Festival, the band’s live trajectory was momentarily checked by the pandemic. But as hopes for future touring grow stronger the group are excited about finally getting back out in front of people, both in the US and abroad.
